Abrasion Resistance

Abrasion Resistance Testing

Abrasion resistance is an important test to determine the durability of your products, particularly for flooring and walking surfaces. The test involves mounting a flat specimen to a turntable platform that rotates on a vertical axis at a fixed speed. Characteristic rub-wear action is produced by contact of the test specimen against the sliding rotation of the two abrading wheels. The results of the test determine loss in coasting, change in gloss, color loss, or other changes in appearance.

ICC-ES laboratories have expert engineers on site performing a variety of tests on many products. Partnering with us means getting accurate results in a timely manner. We conduct abrasion resistance tests for various products, including but not limited to:

  • Flooring and walking surfaces
  • Transparent Plastic
  • Paints and Varnishes
  • Coatings
  • Dimension Stone

  • ASTM D1044: Standard Test Method for Resistance of Transparent Plastics to Surface Abrasion
  • ASTM C501: Standard Test Method for Relative Resistance to Wear of Unglazed Ceramic Tile by the Taber Abraser
  • ASTM C1353: Standard Test Method Using the Taber Abraser for Abrasion Resistance of Dimension Stone Subjected to Foot Traffic
