Brea, Calif. – ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), a member of the International Code Council of companies and the experts in building product evaluation and certification, issued ESR-4488 to Tesla, Inc. for their Solar Roof System. This report provides evidence that the Tesla Solar Roof System is in compliance with code requirements of the 2018, 2015 and 2012 International Building Codes (IBC) and International Residential Codes (IRC) and 2019 California Building Code (CBC) and California Residential Code (CRC).

The Tesla Solar Roof System is a complete roof covering system composed of electrically active building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) and (inactive) non-BIPV roof tiles. The BIPV roof tiles generate electricity from the sun and include photovoltaic modules. The non-BIPV roof tiles are similar to the BIPV roof tiles, except that they do not include photovoltaic cells, and therefore do not generate electricity.

ICC-ES revised its acceptance criteria (AC) for Building-integrated Photovoltaic Roof Covering Systems to include requirements applicable to the Tesla Solar Roof System. This revision to AC365 will allow for seamless product approval for installation.

ICC-ES is ready to serve the photovoltaic and solar thermal industries by evaluating new and innovative products and systems for compliance with code requirements,” said ICC-ES Senior Staff Engineer Chris Allen.
