ICC-ES provides national-level certification of innovative and standardized construction products based on Canadian codes and standards. We are a one-stop testing, inspection and certification option for Canada (and Australia, Mexico, the UAE, the USA, and more!).
Our rigorous and reliable evaluation reports and listings are trusted by authorities having jurisdiction across Canada, and our acceptance criteria (ACs) based on the National Building Code of Canada demonstrates our investment and commitment to expanding the capacity for innovation in Canadian construction.
ICC-ES is an ISO/IEC 17065 compliant product certification body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. We offer Evaluation Service Listings (ESLs) to hundreds of Canadian code-referenced standards to provide nationally-recognized confidence that products meet, and continue to meet, the rigorous standards of Canadian building codes.
ICC-ES is an SCC accredited product certification body.
SCC Scope of Accreditation
Certification represents the highest level of conformity assessment, including initial qualification of the product against rigorous requirements, and the ongoing monitoring of the production process and audits of the documented quality system to ensure continuous compliance.
What do you do when the building code doesn’t refer to a standard or prescriptive requirement for a product? ICC-ES can provide a nationally recognized Evaluation Service Report (ESR) substantiating that the product meets the requirements of Canadian codes, based on rigorous testing and/or engineering analysis following a proprietary Canadian Acceptance Criteria. ICC-ES’ more than 90 years of experience evaluating construction products makes them experts in code compliance.

ICC-ES understands code compliance for products in Canada. Following the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada, Division A, Clause 1.2.1.1.(1)(b), ICC-ES acceptance criteria consider the implications of novel materials, innovative building techniques and novel manufacturing approaches. Our staff participate in Canadian standards development to stay abreast of the latest in technologies, and work with Canadian design professionals and experts in developing ICC-ES’ world-renowned, rigorous and now made-for-Canada Acceptance Criteria.
What are Acceptance Criteria? Unlike traditional certification bodies, ICC-ES develops unique criteria for innovative construction products – called Acceptance Criteria. When a code-referenced standard doesn’t exist to address an innovative product these standard-like documents set out the code requirements based on the alternative solution process described in the National Building Code of Canada.
Our decades of experience in criteria development are unmatched.
Our transparent, rigorous development process includes Canadian design professional review, a public comment period, and approval by our Canadian Evaluation Committee, comprised of Canadian building officials.

As a national level evaluation service, it is important that the perspective of Canadian authorities having jurisdiction (building officials, construction authorities) is represented in setting evaluation criteria for innovative products. In addition to being subjected to public comment, Canadian Acceptance Criteria are presented to the ICC-ES Canadian Evaluation Committee for approval before being used as the basis for code evaluations.
The committee is composed of members who represent organizations enforcing construction regulations in Canada.
