ASTM C501 – Abrasion Resistance of Unglazed Ceramic Tile

Standard: ASTM C501 Standard Test Method for Relative Resistance to Wear of Unglazed Ceramic Tile by the Taber Abraser

Scope: Per ASTM C501: "This test method covers the establishment of an abrasive wear index by determination of the loss of weight resulting from abrasion of unglazed ceramic tile."

Products: Unglazed ceramic tiles

Procedure: Each ceramic tile is cut to size for testing and then weighed. The specimen is mounted onto the abrading machine equipped with vitrified H-22 coarse calibrade wheels. A load of 1,000 grams is applied to each wheel, and then both wheels are lowered onto the test specimen surface. After the abraser completes 1,000 cycles (revolutions), the specimens are reweighed to determine the mass loss due to abrasion.

Result: An abrasive wear index is established based on test results.
