ASTM D4060 - Abrasion Resistance of Organic Coatings
Standard: ASTM D4060 Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Organic Coatings by the Taber Abraser
Scope: Per ASTM D4060: "This test method covers the determination of the resistance of organic coatings to abrasion produced by the Taber Abraser on coatings applied to a plane, rigid surface, such as a metal panel."
Products: Organic coatings
Procedure: The specimen is weighed and then mounted onto the abrading machine equipped with resilient Calibrase wheels CS-10 or CS-17, as required – or as otherwise agreed upon. A load of 1,000 grams is applied to each wheel, and then both wheels are lowered onto the test specimen surface. Specimens are checked periodically, and testing may be terminated when an agreed-upon end point is reached (e.g. specified mass loss, number of cycles / revolutions). The specimens are reweighed to determine the mass loss due to abrasion.
Result: An abrasive wear index is established based on test results.
