ASTM D3389 - Abrasion Resistance of Coated Fabrics
Standard: ASTM D3389 Standard Test Method for Coated Fabrics Abrasion Resistance (Rotary Platform Abrader)
Scope: Per ASTM D3389: "This test method covers the determination of the wear resistance of fabrics coated with rubber or plastics to abrasion. The abrasion is measured by mass loss or number of cycles required to wear through the coating to initially expose the base fabric."
Products: Fabrics coated with rubber or plastic
Procedure: The specimen is weighed and then mounted onto the abrading machine equipped with vitrified H-18 calibrade wheels. A load of 1,000 grams is applied to each wheel, and then both wheels are lowered onto the test specimen surface. Specimens are checked periodically, and testing typically ends when the first yarn exposure occurs – or for a designated number of cycles (revolutions). The specimens are reweighed to determine the mass loss due to abrasion.
Result: An abrasive wear index is established based on test results.
