ASTM D1044 – Abrasion Resistance of Transparent Plastics

ASTM D1044 - Abrasion Resistance of Transparent Plastics

Standard: ASTM D1044 Standard Test Method for Resistance of Transparent Plastics to Surface Abrasion by the Taber Abraser

Scope: Per ASTM D1044: "This test method describes a procedure for estimating the resistance of transparent plastics to one kind of surface abrasion by measuring the change in optical properties."

Products: Light-transmitting plastics, transparent plastics

Procedure: Before testing, the specimen is cleaned and placed in a hazemeter to determine level (percentage) of haze. It is then mounted onto the abrading machine equipped with CS-10F wheels. A load of 500 grams (or as otherwise agreed upon) is applied to each wheel, and then both wheels are lowered onto the test specimen surface. Specimens are checked periodically, and testing may be terminated when an agreed-upon end point is reached (e.g. specified mass loss, number of cycles / revolutions). The specimens are reweighed to determine the mass loss due to abrasion.

Result: The level of haze (percentage) due to abrasion is established based on test results.
